Career ‘journey’ chance for talented artists

BUDDING artists are being invited to create a book based on the theme of ‘Journeys’ to showcase their talents.

The Artists’ Book Competition is being run by Leighton Buzzard Library until October and is open to anyone over the age of 16.

As well as adding to their portfolio of work to support university or job applications, participants will also have their work displayed as part of an exhibition at the library during November.

Participants can display their artwork in either a handmade book or a pre-bought sketchbook, while the art itself can be expressed through any medium – including collage, paint, print, ink or textiles.

Cllr Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Sustainable Communities Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “The Artists Book Competition is a great activity for students and adults to get involved in and the theme of ‘Journeys’ is so broad, we are eagerly anticipating a diverse set of entries.

“With competition for places on courses in Higher Education fiercer then ever, I’d really urge young people to take part, as the book will act as a record of their talents that they can use when applying to university or as a portfolio during an interview.”

Winning entries in the two age categories, 16 to 21 and over 21s, will receive prizes including artists materials, a craft bundle and an art book from competition sponsors Loobi Crafts, Room No. 9 and Denial Promotions. These Leighton Buzzard based businesses make up the judging panel along with a young artist and a member of the local arts society.

Lynne Gretton of Loobi Crafts said: “We have a close relationship with the library, which helps both of us as we can help promote each others services and events – like the Artist’s Book Competition. Loobi Crafts was started six years ago as we felt there was a need for a specialist scrapbooking and card making shop in the town. The service we offer is personal and community orientated, and we run occasional classes at the library where people can learn a craft.”

The completed books must be delivered to Leighton Buzzard Library between Saturday, October 1 and Saturday 15.

All of the entrants will be invited to the launch of the exhibition at Leighton Buzzard Library on Wednesday, November 2, where all of the books will be on display and the winner will be announced. All of the entries will continue to be displayed at the library between November 3-19.
