Celebrities line up for the big match

A HOST of celebrities will grace Leighton Town FC's Bell Close in a special charity match next month.

Celebrity United, managed by former England striker Luther Blissett, will be taking a team of 16 stars to play a Leighton 'Old Boys' team featuring some of the club's own stars of the past.

Possible celebs and former sports stars involved could include Les Ferdinand, Ben Sheppard, Matt Le Tissier, Ralf Little, Alec Stewart, John Barnes, MC Harvey and Brian McFadden.

The Old Boys will be featuring former players such as James Heeps, Steve Mills, Steve Kirkby, Craig Johnson, Kenny Hollis and Robbie Brightman.

Celebrity United were created following the successful Sky One programme, The Match, and they now play special invitational matches to raise money for charity.

They have a squad of 28 and guarantee 16 celebs will play, eight of which will be high profile.

Iain McGregor, chairman of Leighton Town FC, says the game will raise the club profile and most importantly raise money for Willen Hospice, where his wife Mary died in January.

Charity

He told the Citizen: "We are always thinking of ways to raise the profile of our club and this will do just that and raise money for a very worthy charity.

"This game shows that we're a caring club in the community.

"We would like to get in about 500-800 people for the game and also have lots of other activities for the youngsters so it's going to be a really special day."

The match, which will be played on April 29, will be a big game for Celebrity United too as it's their first of the season.

Manager Luther Blissett said: "Celebrity United are really looking forward to playing at Leighton Town FC and for such a good cause. We expect to field a strong squad for the first game of our season."
