Cheque out shops scam

Leighton traders duped out of thousands of pounds worth of goods by fraudster

Some of Leighton's independent traders will no longer be accepting cheques from shoppers after being duped out of thousands of pounds by a fraudster using a disability scooter.

A total of 4,000 worth of goods were paid for by a woman using a cheque book from an account that was no longer open, leaving the shops out of pocket.

Angela Allen from Angelicas in Rylands Mews took a cheque for goods totaling 375 only to find it was returned by the bank and marked 'account closed'.

One of the town's largest independent traders was conned out of 1,800 worth of furniture and handbags, while Rubies Shoes in North Street lost 300 worth of shoes.
