Children’s trail a novel idea

editorial image

FANS of the classic story ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’ can now take part in their very own adventure trail – although there are likely to be more borrowers than bears in Leighton town centre.

Inspired by Michael Rosen’s book and the town’s links with Borrowers author Mary Norton who lived here as a child, the Children’s Trail will open at the end of August.

It will be full of imaginitive pieces of artwork and literary references and is being championed by the internationally acclaimed Mr Rosen.

Mr Rosen said: “I think this is a great idea. Children often learn actively, through doing and making and moving. I’m honoured and delighted that you have chosen a book I helped create as part of your Children’s Trail. I hope it gives you all many moments of fun, interest and excitement. Best of luck.”

The trail is being jointly funded by Central Bedfordshire Council and Leighton-Linsalde Town Council using Section 106 developer public art contributions.

Artist Martin Heron has been commissioned to create the Trail and over the past few months has held creative workshops in Leighton schools and the community. To link in with the Trail’s theme, writer Lucy Banwell was also invited to set up an online ‘storyspinner’ writing and multimedia project in Leighton Middle School (Mary Norton’s school) and Cedars Upper School.

Residents can follow the work that the young people have produced by going to http://childrenstrail.tumblr.com/ where they can also sign up to the dedicated blog, or visit Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ChildrensTrail to find out much more about the trail.
