Cyclists and walkers from Leighton Buzzard have helped to raise £117,000 for churches and chapels in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
Churchgoers from across the two counties participated in the Beds and Herts Historic Churches Trust’s annual Bike ‘n’ Hike event on September 14, with the money raised now counted and collected.
Half of the final cash total – of which All Saints Church in Leighton contributed more than £1,200 – will go straight to local churches while the rest is kept by the Trust, which provides grants to churches struggling to meet their repair bills.
Organiser Madeline Russell said: “The weather was not very good so although we were aiming for a target of £100,000 we were really quite staggered when the total crept past that figure, topping £117,000.
“More than 600 churches and chapels of many denominations were specially open on the day and churches throughout the two counties sent out walkers and cyclists to visit them, with an amazing amount of sponsorship on their backs.”
