The wait goes on for a sports club that has been trying to secure funding needed for extra facilities.

Linslade Tennis Club wants £20,000 from Leighton-Linslade Town Council towards the cost of a clubhouse building at Mentmore Park.

But last Monday the council’s policy and finance committee agreed in principle to find the money, meaning there was no final decision to grant the cash.

Councillor Mike Bishop said: “I sense that the representative of the tennis club was disappointed that a final decision could not be made at this meeting after it had been recommended by the town council’s leisure and community committee.

“However, Mentmore Park is owned by the town council so legal details over ownership and future maintenance and use of the building will have to be resolved.

“The council’s own plans for the existing pavilion and park also have to be taken into account.”

But Mike Phillips, who has been chairman of Linslade Tennis Club for six years, said: “I was not disappointed, so I am confused as to why that has been said.

“We always expected there would have to be a legal agreement with the council and the club house.

“I came out of the meeting feeling very optimistic because we had unanimous support from the committee because they can see what we are trying to do for the community.

“I would like to extend my thanks to the council for their continued support with this.”

Talks will begin next week to discuss the details moving forward, but it is not expected that there will be a confirmed decision in the near future.
