Doctor's vain bid to save victim
THE actions of a quick-thinking doctor were not enough to save a 70-year-old man after he collided with a car in the town centre.
David William Kempster, of Meadow Way, was involved in an accident with a grey Volkswagen Polo at the junction of Duncombe Drive and Lake Street at 10am on Monday.
The incident took place just outside Lake House Surgery and Dr Miheengar Shafi was on the scene moments later to help Mr Kempster.
He told the Citizen: "A patient came running in and said 'someone is in the road, there's been an accident'. So I came out immediately, saw him lying on the road and put him on his side.
"He was bleeding from the nose and the back of the head, where he had a big cut. He was not unconscious but not responding fully. I said 'are you OK' and he said 'yes'.
"There was not much more that could be done and the ambulance was there within two to three minutes."
He was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital where he died on Tuesday, the cause of death given as a severe cerebral trauma consistent with a road traffic accident.
The female driver of the Polo was shaken but unhurt.
Dr Shafi added he had been concerned with that stretch of road: "It's a really bad corner and a lot of elderly people and mothers and children cross there. It's really dangerous.
"One of the patients also told me he was on his way into the town to buy some euros as he was going on holiday this week. It's really tragic."
Police say the area was busy with people at the time and they are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident.
Anyone with information about the accident should contact the officer in the case, PC Debbie James, in the Collision Investigation Unit, on 01234 842469 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
