Drivers bash into Jan's car for the seventh time

Resident says hooligans behave like animals.

A car owner in Meadow Way, Leighton, says he has had enough of erratic drivers and unsympathetic police after the seventh crash involving his vehicle happened outside his home.

Jan Szuca's silver Ford Mondeo Estate was parked outside his house when another car ploughed into it in the middle of the night, causing major damage.

Witnesses said the car took the bend sharply at speed, hit the kerb, and bashed into the Mondeo, knocking it into a van parked behind it.

Angry, Mr Szuca said: "I heard the bang and I just knew it was my car again. Neighbours came out to help me. I phoned the police at 1am, and they finally turned up at 3am."

Neighbours who heard the crash jumped out of bed and took the registration number of the rogue car as it was trying to drive away. "It was such an almighty crash it frightened the life out of us," they said.

Mr Szuca and his neighbours saw the car they believe responsible parked just 200 yards up the road. Police told the LBO that they were investigating.

Mr Szuca has lived on Meadow Way for 19 years, and in that time his cars have been hit seven times outside his house. He said that only one driver had insurance, leaving him to claim on his, resulting in expensive premiums. The Mondeo was only repaired 14 months ago.

"Once again, I am left to pay the bill."

During his time on the estate, Mr Szuca has been burgled and had his dog stolen from his garden. He has also seen children knocked down on the road outside his house.

"There are hooligans behaving like animals on this estate. If this is society, then I don't want it.” he said.

Police say they were given misleading information during the call that at first sent them off in a different direction as they were led to believe the car had left Meadow Way.

“This investigation is still under way, but if Mr Szuca is unhappy with any element of the investigation he can contact Beds Police to make a formal complaint.”

The suspect car was towed away on Monday lunchtime and Scene of Crime officers have examined it.

And a spokesperson for South Bedfordshire District Council confirmed that if a tenant wishes to convert their garden into a parking facility it must be done at his or her cost after obtaining planning permission.

“We are not aware of having spoken to Mr Szuca on this issue and we would be happy to discuss the matter further with him if he would like to contact the council’s Landlord Services team.”
