Drought fears washed away? Tuesday Update

LEIGHTONIANS hampered by the hosepipe ban should strap on their waders and head down to the currently sub-aquatic Water Meadows, where H2O is plentiful.

In a reminder that eccentricity isn’t only confined to English aristocracy, parts of Leighton are subject to a flood warning at the same time they are experiencing drought, according to the Environment Agency.

A week of wet weather culminated in torrential downpours on Sunday, sending a surge of water into the Ouzel, raising river levels to near-record levels.

The Water Meadows to the north of Leighton Road, a favourite spot for cattle in summer, lived up to its name and were fully submerged by 12noon.

By Sunday evening water levels had reached 1.53m – just 6cm shy of the highest level since records began – and while flood warnings remained in place, levels had dropped to 0.77m by Monday afternoon.

UPDATE

As of noon on Tuesday, Leighton remained on flood alert after river levels in the Ouzel started to rise again in response to the morning’s accumulations of rain. However, Environment Agency officials said they do not anticipate a similar rise in levels to that which was seen at the weekend as the forecast for the next 24 hours is for isolated spells of light rain with comparatively low accumulations to those seen recently.
