Evacuation after danger gas fear
No Caption ABCDE
A transit van containing a potentially explosive gas cylinder went up in flames yesterday forcing ten Leighton businesses to be evacuated.
The incident happened outside Tuffnells Parcels Express in Cherrycourt Way at 3.15pm, but the area was not declared safe by the Leighton Buzzard fire station’s commander until 8am this morning.
The driver of the van was unable to put out the fire himself, but alerted emergency services to the dangerous situation when they arrived shortly after.
Fire crews immediately cordoned off a 200m radius to the fire, evacuated everyone in the vicinity and worked with police and ambulance services to make the area safe.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
