Family and friends join Alice for landmark

Even after living for a whole century, a true Buzzard never found anywhere else that could measure up to her beloved hometown.

Alice Turney celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday with her her sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who despite living in Canada, flew over to be with her on her special day.

On her birthday Alice had plenty of visitors to Westlands Care home of Duncombe Drive, where she is a full-time resident and has been since August 2007. For the celebration, everyone came together including friends and family, to eat and reminisce about the old days.

Although living most of her life in St Andrew Street, Leighton, Alice briefly moved to Rushden and out with each of her sons in Canada, but her heart always remained in Leighton Buzzard.

The 100-year-old has lived a full life as during the Second World War she housed several people from the Women’s Royal Air Force.

Although born Alice Cosby she became Mrs Sid Turney in the 1930s and went on to have two sons Ian, 72, and Ricky, 66, who gave her four grandchildren; Paul, Stewart, Dawn and Laura.

She is now the proud great grandmother of six.

Her youngest son, Ricky said: “We are so proud to be here celebrating mum’s 100th birthday.”
