Festive drink drive figures are down

editorial image

Police saw a fall in the number of people drinking and driving over the Christmas period, compared to last year.

Between December 1 and January 1, 80 people were arrested for testing positive, or refusing or failing a breath test – a decrease of 11 compared with the same period the year before.

Police and Crime Commissioner Olly Martins said: “This welcome fall in drink and drug-driving arrests underlines how socially unacceptable driving while impaired has become.

“Personally I have long believed there is no safe alcohol limit for driving other than zero and I am glad that this view too is increasingly taking root.

“I also support the call for members of the public to report drink drivers. Drink driving is a killer and we all have a responsibility to prevent it.”
