First school in Beds to have solar heating
Solar panels are a learning curve
MARY Bassett Lower School is the first school in Bedfordshire to have solar panels fitted.
The school, in Bassett Road, Leighton, received over 40,000 in funding from the National Lottery-funded Community Sustainable Energy Programme, Low Carbon Buildings Programme and its PTA. Ardenham Energy completed the installation of the 52 solar panels in the half term holiday.
The electricity generated is synchronised with the grid supply via inverters and will be used to supply clean energy to the school as well as exporting to the grid for use elsewhere when there is more energy produced in sunny weather.
The 8.6 kWp array is almost silent in operation and will generate around 8000kWh of greenhouse gas-free electricity each year.
The children can see a display panel in reception which shows energy production as well as kilowatt and carbon dioxide savings.
Head teacher Deborah Pargeter said: "A town centre school is showing the way forward for everyone – if we can do it then anyone can. We wanted to do our bit for the environment by reducing our carbon footprint and we are all really excited that we have taken such a big step."
