Fishy goings on at the canal
Men spotted stealing fish in Linslade section
Anglers and other waterways users are being asked to keep a weather out for fish thieves on the Grand Union Canal.
The appeal comes from the Luton Angling Club, which owns fishing rights to the section of the canal through Linslade, and follows an incident last weekend when a bailiff caught two men, believed to be eastern Europeans, with eight dead bream in a bucket.
Club press officer Steve Sharp said the bailiff took the bucket off the men and explained that it is an offence to fish without a valid rod licence and, if convicted, it could lead to a 2,500 fine.
Mr Sharp said stealing fish for the pot is a growing concern among anglers across the country and not only depletes stocks but, left unchecked, is in danger of upsetting the balance of nature.
Anyone with information about suspicious anglers on the Grand Union Canal, or any of the Luton Angling Club's waters, is asked to telephone the fisheries manager on 07735 337341. Alternatively, telephone the Environment Agency hotline on 0800 807060.
