Floating the idea of joining in with Leighton’s carnival
Having encouraged you to help us find the Carnival Queens and Princesses from previous years, we now need your help to make the procession reflect those of our youth; when the floats seemed to be endless, the fancy dress of the walkers ever more outrageous, the bands’ music filled the air and flags to wave were in an abundant supply.
Have you thought about putting in a float? Businesses, schools, groups, associations, bands – the list of floats could be endless.
Many of you have your own lorries already planned and we are really pleased to see different vehicles in the procession reflecting the haulage industry as one of the biggest employment sectors in the towns.
Having trouble finding a vehicle? Well, let’s let you into a secret. Down on Firbank Way there is a company called S & J Pierce, which has been taking part in Leighton Linslade Carnival for over 12 years. Steve, Jenny, Carol and Gavin provide the lorry/trailer, fuel and driver free to charity and non-profit organisations! All you have to do is decorate it, then sit back and enjoy the ride!
If only half of their 40 vehicles were booked by you what a procession we would have! Call Carol or Steve on 01525 850009 to reserve your vehicle.
Nowhere to decorate it? They will welcome you to their yard on the Friday evening/Saturday morning where you can decorate away to your heart’s content! Alternatively, they will deliver the trailer to your place- and then take it away again when you have finished for safe storage over Friday night.
To many of their drivers carnival day has become a fixture in their diaries they all look forward to. They really are a happy bunch and join in with the carnival spirit! Washing and polishing their lorries to perfection these competitive individuals always want to be amongst the drivers of the winning floats! It must be in the company blood as Steve has driven in the carnival for some 30 years! He and Gavin also help with the route details and marshalling of vehicles at the start and finish of the procession.
What kind of organisations have a float? Well over the past few years all of the following (plus more) have been in the procession. Schools like Mary Bassett, St George’s, Brooklands Pre-school and Pulfords. Community floats – Brooklands Club, Meadow Way and Sandhills to name a few. From the Leighton Buzzard Drama Club to charities like Kids Out, the RAF, Scouts and The Church of The Latter Day Saints. Not to mention Doreen’s School of Dancing and Curtain Call.
All these and many more have had floats. There is a place for everyone, not to mention the chance to win a modest prize or two!
Perhaps you have (or work for) a business with its own special vehicle – why not take part? It costs nothing to enter the procession! Who owns the steam engines, old fire engines, cars, bikes and buses in town? Bring them out for a day’s outing and blow those cobwebs away! Let us see what a rich heritage there is in Leighton-Linslade!
Don’t forget if you don’t fancy a float you can join in by marching walking, cycling, being pushed in your pram, in your wheelchair or on your mobility scooter. Hula hoop your way round if you like!
Finally, we would still like to hear about bands that have taken part in our last 60 carnivals; together with the attractions, games and displays that you remember with affection and would like to see again.
Let’s see if together we can make it a bumper carnival day! Keep those photos coming in!
Maggie Rich, Leighton-LinsladeCarnival Committee.
