FOOTBALL: Leighton Town settle for a point
Quick reply earns a draw
Leighton Town 1
Atherstone Town 1
Leighton had to settle for a point after a largely uninspiring match in which both teams worked hard.
Leighton created more chances particularly in the first half and if they had taken just one of those they could probably have gone on to take all three points.
Town made some team changes after Tuesday night's exciting win over Arlesey. Wes Lewis was recalled in midfield, James McNulty moved to centre back to replace Peter Clifford and Dan Walker replaced Ben Gallant who was forced to pull out during the pre-match warm up.
Goalkeeper Lee Clark returned to the bench after several weeks out with a problematic knee injury.
Town started brightly and some good work by Aston Goss created a chance for Wes Lewis but his shot was blocked by the visitors' defence.
Leighton should have taken the lead in the 25th minute when Goss played a pass through for Dan Walker who lobbed it over the keeper but the ball rebounded back off the post and James Hatch following up headed the rebound over an empty goal when he had more time than he realised.
Six minutes later Walker broke clear of the defence but his left-footed shot went just wide of the far post. Right on the interval Goss put a poor free kick over the bar from a good position.
The visitors took a shock lead in the 46th minute when Keen ran through the middle and then shot low in to the net.
Town responded quickly when Ben Porter shot through the keeper's legs to level the scores in the 48th minute.
