Gran dies following Stoke Hammond canal boat tragedy

Freak accident claims life of woman on family boating holiday.

A 61-year-old grandmother lost her battle for life two days after being swept from a narrow boat on the Grand Union Canal at Stoke Hammond, it was revealed this week.

Retired NHS worker Wendy Brennan died last weekend in Milton Keynes Hospital from head injuries. An inquest has been opened into her death but a full inquiry isn't likely to be heard until early next year.

Mrs Brennan and her family had rented the boat from Wyvern Shipping, in Linslade, for a five day mini break. They were on their way back to the boatyard on July 15 when a willow tree crashed onto the stern where Mrs Brennan had been standing.

Her husband, Michael, and son, who were also on-board, were thrown into the water but they were able to pull themselves to safety. Mrs Brennan disappeared beneath the surface, trapped under the tree by its foliage.
