Hubble, bubble, let's do chemistry at the double!

CHEMISTRY at Work came to Vandyke Upper School's science department for a day.

The school hosted representatives from a number of local and national organisations and companies, who held demonstrations to show some of the practical applications of chemistry in industry.

Eleven different demonstrations took place relating to asthma, burglar alarms, conservation chemistry, cornflour chemistry, living-on-less energy, food production, gel making, printing without paper, the journey of oil, the periodic table of the elements and toxic land.

Jon Norton, Vandyke's head of science said: "This was a fantastic opportunity to show students that chemistry is not just test tubes and bunsen burners. It impacts upon our lives in many ways and offers many job and career opportunities."

Around 200 year 9 students were involved in the event, which was organised by Vandyke in conjunction with the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The RSC event organiser, Derek Jones, is always on the look out for businesses who wish to take part in future events in the area. They can contact him at derek_jones@btopenworld.com.
