In the market for retail battle

Another sign of unity against the development of an out-of-town retail park in Leighton was shown as petitioners stood out at the Market Cross to hand out leaflets.
Victoria Harvey, of South Bedforshire’s Friends of the Earth, commandeered a market stall on Tuesday, which saw 73 people filled in forms to the planning authority against the proposed plans..
She said: “At first a retail park might sound great, but when you think of the effect it could have on local shops and the market and the fact that it could reduce our chance of ever getting good clothes shops in the town, the picture changes. We are urging people to come to the Community Forum.”
Already 71 local shops have signed a petition against the application after developers admitted between £2.9m and £3.5m of trade from the town centre would be lost.
Comments on the day included concerns of the detrimental effect on the High Street.
