Landlord Jake is giving it both barrels

ONLY a few years ago he was confined to lemonade, but that hasn’t barred Leighton’s youngest landlord from making a splash.

It’s been four months since 22-year-old Jake Moxham took charge of Heath and Reach’s Axe & Compass, and in that time the young pint puller has made a big impression.

With the aim of creating an environment where both adults and their children can have fun – Jake’s food and drink offers have been popular with grown ups, while events like his easter egg hunt were a hit with the kids.

But it’s not all plain sailing.

With the latest CAMRA figures revealing that 12 pubs close in Britain every week, many claim that traditional pubs like the Axe & Compass could soon be calling last orders.

But despite these naysayers declaring the proverbial pint glass half empty, Jake says he up to the task and thinks there’s plenty of life left in the pub trade.

“It’s obviously tough at the moment, but I like a good challenge,” the Toddington lad told the LBO.

“I strongly believe that if you do the basics well – offering good beer, good food and good service – then your pub will succeed.

“We’re focusing on creating a family atmosphere, with an emphasis on food and fun for children, but it’s also a place where you can come for a good drink.”
