Leighton cartoonist awarded
Any doubts Leighton cartoonist Simon Tofield may have had about the popularity of his animated creation Simon’s Cat can safely be forgotten as the moggy masterpiece has been crowned UK favourite celebrity cat at the Cat Protection’s National Cat Awards 2012.
With 269million online views for his Simon’s Cat videos, the public’s adoration of the cartoon was already quite obvious.
In addition to this, in July this year Simon’s Cat starred in an exhibition at the Cartoon Museum in London, alongside Nick Park’s Gromit and David Low’s TUC Carthorse.
The global stardom achieved by the artist is a far cry from five years ago when Simon and his black cat Hugh, who serves as the inspiration for the animation, were completely unknown.
Their profile was raised after Tofield produced a computerised showreel of his work in an effort to keep up with software in the industry. His animations were launched onto YouTube where they became an internet sensation.
Simon, who still lives in Leighton, now has a soft toy and newspaper strip dedicated to Simon’s Cat, and a fourth book of the popular puss will be published soon.
Firework advice
If you are thinking ahead and planning a firework display to celebrate Guy Fawkes night in November, then seek advice from a Bedfordshire safety group.
Central Bedfordshire Safety Advisory Group is looking ahead to November and giving early advice and support to those planning a public firework event.
The Safety Advisory Group (SAG) brings together public protection services from Central Bedfordshire Council and the emergency services to make sure that organisers of big public events put in place effective safety plans and arrangements.
More information can be found on the council’s website, www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/community-safety/SAG.aspx
Questions can also be emailed to SAG@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk
