Leighton traders fight retail plan
SHOP owners in Leighton town centre have made a last ditch plea to planners not to back plans for an out-of-town retail park which they say would destroy their businesses.
A group of them have produced a “statement of fact” which they have sent to councillors, the mayor and MP Andrew Selous in a bid to block a developer’s plans to build a new building for Homebase accompanied by up to four other smaller retail units, car parking and catering “pods” on land at Grovebury Road
In their letter they state: “Further to discussion on the proposed out of town development at Grovebury Road consultants are quoted as saying 90% of people are for the development. Our signed petition found 90% of shops and market stalls are against it. We have over 70 signatures against this development from the town centre traders alone.
