Leighton school worker was unfairly dismissed

Headteacher under fire in tribunal report

A Leighton school site agent and her family could lose their home despite winning a fight for unfair dismissal against the governors.

Teresa Black was sacked from Brooklands Middle School by headmaster Steve Harrington Williams for carrying out orders he had given.

He then carried out his own internal inquiry into the matter and dominated a meeting of the governors when they decided to dismiss the mother of two.

The head only came clean when confronted and cross-examined at an employment tribunal where he also tried to influence his bursar's evidence.

Former chairman of the governors, Simon Lockwood, told the tribunal that "it did enter his mind that there was an implication that the head had done something wrong and that he might not be impartial".

He also admitted the disciplinary panel who sacked Mrs Black acted unreasonably and based their decision on flawed evidence.

The battle to clear her name has wrecked the 48-year-old's health, left her jobless, and will see her family out on the streets as the house they occupy on the school site was tied to the job. They have been told to vacate in January.

She will also have to wait until January to discover how much she is to be financially awarded after winning her tribunal case.

Speaking on behalf of the school, Central Bedfordshire Council said: "We are still looking into the report from the tribunal and at this time cannot comment further".
