Man rescued from blaze dies

Leighton victim can't be saved by hospital

A Leighton man who was taken to hospital with massive burns after a devastating fire at his Kilgour Court flat has lost his fight for life.

The 54-year-old died last Friday at the Chelmsford Hospital, Essex, where he was being treated in the specialist burns unit.

He is not being named until a post mortem is carried out and an inquest into his death is opened.

The tragedy unfolded at just after midnight on August 22 when witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames billowing from the windows of the first floor apartment.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus battled their way upstairs and found the man, who was recovering from a hip operation and needed crutches to walk, unconscious on the floor.

He was carried outside and handed over to paramedics who rushed him to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

He was later transferred to Chelmsford where he succumbed to his injuries.

Kilgour Court is owned by Central Beds Council and managed by the Mayday Trust, a charity that provides specialised support, life-skills, training and accommodation for vulnerable adults.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the fire and released on police bail until Friday pending further enquiries.

Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and a full examination of the property by fire investigators and forensic experts is currently being carried out.
