New leader for I Love Leighton Buzzard group

Big plans in the pipeline

The I Love Leighton Buzzard group has a new leader and the 'steaks' are high to make sure all the group's good work is continued.

After escalating work commitments Vince Garvin has handed the reins over to a well known face in our High Street, Andrew Stanton of Strattons the butchers in Market Square.

Andrew will be flanked by two vice chairmen Gennaro Borrelli, owner of A Touch Of Class in Bridge Street, and Colin Ashby from Buzzard Books in High Street Mews. All are keen to carry on the successes and foundations Vince has laid over the last 12 months.

Andrew, Gennaro, and the team have already made some outline plans for Leighton's High Street, including tree planting, and street shaping to make surroundings inviting.

There are also regular Saturday lunchtime events in the pipeline - all to help create a nice shopping atmosphere.

A bigger scheme for the group though is watching the south side of the High Street project develop. The whole area behind Wilkinsons and Selections is earmarked for re-development and Andrew and Gennaro want the I Love LB group to be actively involved in making sure shop space with parks, benches and trees is favoured over housing.

At this year's May Day Fayre the group will be asking Leighton-Linslade people to tick a preference box - shops or flats? The findings will be collated and sent to Central Bedfordshire Council.

The non-political group is also looking for new members.

Andrew and Gennaro's ultimate aim is to encourage a big department store to the town. The pair are very optimistic for Leighton's future and will be building further bridges with the town council, community groups and Central Beds to make sure Leighton's High Street continues to flourish.

Gennaro said: "We cannot afford to be complacent, the recession is not over yet and there may be harder times to come before we see a definite improvement. We aim to do as much as we can for Leighton's High Street with the little resources we have."

Looking forward to his year at the helm, Andrew said: "I am pleased to take over from Vince. I would like to thank him for his hard work and support over the last 12 months.

"Leighton Buzzard is a great community and we must move forward positively to provide services which people want in order for them to stay shopping locally."

Another diary date to watch out for is a Go Local Fair in mid-June, which I Love LB are currently putting together. It will include local food producers and arts and crafts.
