Plenty of fun ... and rain!

LEIGHTON crossed its fingers and the rain half-heartedly soaked the town but it didn’t stop the townspeople turning out to enjoy this year’s bumper May Fayre.

Today’s event was opened by celebrity farrier Dean Dibsdall, last year’s Mr Bedfordshire, who won Channel Four’s Playing It Straight reality dating programme.

He was in the High Street at 10am to launch the spectacle and was seen throughout the day giving a demonstration of his trade in Parson’s Close Recreation Ground.

Other highlights of the May Fayre were pig racing with four races – The Pork Walk, The Rasher Dasher, The Gammon Stakes and Trotters Triumphant – and there was a tote for those wanting a flutter.

Bright sparks among the crowd could visit the Jackson & Phillips pitstop to try their hand at the fastest spark plug change competition, while the adventurous could ride the popular Segway bikes which were making a return visit.

Stall holders bedecked their pitches with red, white and blue bunting to help celebrate the Jubilee year.

In the High Street there was a day of singing and dancing along with dozens of charity stalls. In neighbouring Parsons Close, Leighton Middle School and Pulford School, there were demonstrations and displays from sports clubs, activities, rides and a delicious barbecue. There was also a strong man’s competition, a dazzling mountain bike stunt team and a dog show. All money raised goes to help charities at home and abroad.

Dave Edwards, of the Leighton-Linslade Rotary Club, who organised the event, said afterwards: “The weather could have been better but despite this the people still came out.

“We’re delighted and surprised at how well it went and we’d like to thank the town for supporting us and the stall-holders for continuing to man their pitches.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The youngsters in particular were the first to arrive and the last to go. They must have had a great time.”

The whole day went off trouble free - but one person did lose their purse during the fun. Call Dave Edwards 07900950500 for its return.
