Police drive down crime in Wing south area with week of action

Speeders, yobs, burglars and thieves are targeted.

POLICE were out in the villages around Leighton for a week of action aimed at clamping down on speeding motorists and unruly behaviour.

Last Monday officers were in Ivinghoe, Dagnall and Edlesborough to put the brakes on drivers breaking the 30mph limit.

A day later raids were carried out aimed at catching suspected burglars. One man was arrested in the Wing area while officers also handed out crime prevention advice.

On Wednesday the team were in Wing for a speedwatch campaign that advised drivers of their speeds through the village while in Pitstone and Edlesborough officers carried out an Automatics Number Plate Recognition (APNR) operation that flagged up ten suspect vehicles.

The ANPR was again used outside Cottesloe School, Wing, on Thursday

Over 40 fixed penalty notices were issued to drivers for a range of offences, including using their mobile phones while driving, and not wearing seatbelts.

There were two arrests for possession of cannabis, a man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and there was a further arrest of a man who was wanted by police.

Afterwards Sgt Paul Cladingboel, of Buckingham and Wing Neighbourhood PolicingTeam, who spearheaded the campaign said: "We were pleased with the fact that the vast majority of drivers were well within the speed limits.

"We did have occasion to issue around a dozen speeding tickets, and also to give advice to numerous drivers going slightly over the speeding limits. The object of this operation was to educate drivers, as opposed to simply prosecuting all offences.

"On Friday the area's pubs were visited and anti social behaviour patrols were carried out across the area.

"A number of youths were spoken to, and alcohol was seized from under-age drinkers. Letters have been sent to the parents of individuals acting in an unacceptable manner."

Yesterday the police hit the area's beauty spots to remind visitors not to leave valuables in their vehicles.

Sgt Cladingboel added: "Overall this has been a really positive exercise for the Wing South area and something that we would like to run again in the future.

"PC Jared Levens, PCSO Tina Hobson and PCSO Jackie Dodson, as well as their colleagues from across the Aylesbury Vale and in partner agencies, have worked really hard to make this a productive week and hopefully the residents will have appreciated our presence."
