It probably seemed a good idea at the time but RAF officer Steve Hawkins was nearly put to flight by the pain he endured during a charity body wax.

The flight lieutenant, head of establishment at the former RAF Stanbridge, did his bit for charity on Tuesday by getting his back and chest waxed in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. He started out on the base, now called DE&S Stanbridge, by having colleagues wax his back and then he moved into town to Sunshine and Smoothies beauty saloon where owner Liz Cox and her girls were waiting to complete the job.

Liz provided the staff and equipment for free and held a raffle with all proceeds going to the charity. Waxing was given by Charlotte Scott and Georgia Raymen with Danny Price and Jo Kuempfel ably supporting the day. A total of £242 was raised between Steve’s work colleagues and money raised at Sunshine and Smoothies.

His overall aim is to raise £2,000 by April when he will be competing in his first ever marathon in London.

Said Steve: “Having recently reached 50 I wanted to set myself a challenge and, although I have done a few half marathons, the last one was seven years ago so this will be pretty tough but raising money for such a worthwhile cause makes the effort worthwhile. And yes, it really hurt!”

Steve is in charge of the closure of Stanbridge Road base which is planned shuts its gates for the last time at the end of March. His next event will be sitting in a bath of baked beans in Tesco, Linslade on November 30.
