Should binmen take sacks?

Council should do its job and collect all the rubbish

From Tracey Barter, Palmer Crescent, Leighton:

I saw the article last week with regards to waste collection and I can understand the lady's anger.

When I first moved to Leighton Buzzard in February 2007 the council were fantastic. They took the bin bags and there was never a problem.

We used to recycle as much as we could in the orange sacks and then they introduced another wheelie bin with an orange lid which we fill within a couple of days of it being emptied.

It was my little boy's first birthday on September 7 and we had friends and family over. As you can appreciate our black bin for food waste was over flowing, the cardboard was cut down to size and placed in the other bin which is still over-flowing now, so I put four bin bags out next to my black bin and one on the top. But they took the one off the top of the bin and threw to the ground and emptied the bin but refused to take the other bin bags, saying they wouldn't be collected for a fortnight.

Two days later I had a letter from the recycling team telling me that I was not managing my waste correctly and they wanted to carry out a waste audit, so I telephoned and invited them to come at a convenient time around to my house in Palmer Crescent to carry out the audit. I was told on the phone I was obviously not recycling like I should and obviously didn't understand, which is why I have generated so much rubbish!

After they had insulted me in this way and refused to come out I explained to them that I am the waste and recycling manager for a company and I am well aware of what I can and cannot recycle and that I feel that Leighton Buzzard is not doing enough recycling.

I used to live in Northchurch and never had this problem as Herts County Council has got the refuse down to a fine art! Bedfordshire do not let people put vegetable peelings in with the green waste or pet bedding and seing as I have two cats, a dog and a rabbit this would take away a lot of rubbish out of my black bin.

Beds do not do glass recycling but because this is part of my job and bred into me I keep all my glass waste separate and make a trip to the bottle bank every week, not every two weeks!

I think personally that Leighton Buzzard needs a good shake up and I am still trying to catch up with the bin bags from September as every time the bin is emptied we fill it up again.
