Swedish students in Wonderland
SWEDISH students on exchange at Vandyke Upper School staged an impressive performance of Alice in Wonderland last week.
Foreign students regularly visit the school to improve their English – and their performance, all done in English, was appreciated by a packed audience at the school, with assistant headteacher John Duxbury saying the show was 'superb'.
Ida Zedenius, who played the young Alice, said the experience was great fun.
She said: "Alice in Wonderland is a fantastic book and I love the play. I played the young Alice and so it was important that I did not fall into the madness in the play.
"Most of the characters were mad and when they were strutting around on the stage and talking with crazy voices it was hard not to do the same. I had to talk calmly and nicely because Alice is a very nice girl so I tried my hardest to have a nice English accent.
"That was, of course, a bit hard for me because I don't talk perfect English but I think that doing this play really helped me to improve my English."
Mr Duxbury added it was a credit the youngsters learn their lines so well. He said: "It is a very difficult script for Swedish students but they were word perfect and provided excellent entertainment. It was a superb evening and I am sure that everyone who saw the show was very impressed by their performances. Everyone was excellent, they made a great team."
The next group of 30 Swedish students visiting the town will arrive in September. If you are interested in being a host for a Swedish student please contact Mr Duxbury by the end of April on LB 383595.
