Talented sixth-formers raise over £2,000 for charity
students dance their way to success
TV personality Bruce Forsythe tells viewers every week to "keep dancing" so students at Vandyke Upper School have done exactly that.
Students have spent lunchtimes and breaks raising money for their chosen charity Smile Malawi, which provides a home for vulnerable street children in Blantyre.
They have mocked up their own versions of TV programmes Dragon's Den and Stars in their Eyes, and Friday saw a glittering, toe-tapping performance of Strictly Come Dancing by staff and students swapping school uniform for frilly frocks.
Other events included a summer fayre with apple bobbing and a fortune-teller, Mario cart racing, teacher trivia tests, face painting and sales of toast, cakes and sweets. Finally on Friday there was egg Russian roulette, with at least ten members of staff, including headteacher Tim Carroll facing the raw egg challenge – smashing hard-boiled eggs on their forehead, except a few of them hadn't been cooked!
All the fund-raising events at Vandyke were organised by sixth form students, with other year groups and staff taking part.
So far, over 2,000 has been raised and there is still money coming in, beating past years' takings by several hundred pounds. The money will go directly to the African childrens' centre to help the 12 children currently in its care. In return, Vandyke receives a regular newsletter and updates, enabling the school to see how its donations are being used.
