The annual Bike ‘n Hike event is back

A popular annual event that raises thousands of pounds for the restoration of churches in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire wants to step it up a gear and beat last year’s total.

The Bike ‘n Hike event is taking place this Saturday with people joining together to raise sponsorship to walk or cycle to over 600 churches and chapels across various towns and villages in the two counties.

Madeline Russell, counties organiser, said: “It continues to be extremely popular, we have a growing band  of regulars who look forward to the day with great anticipation and new people are joining each year, anxious to explore our countryside as well as visit the amazing variety of church buildings open, some of which are perhaps a thousand years old.

“Last year, through sponsorship, they managed to raise a total of £102,000 in the day, it would be good if we can beat this total in 2012.

“It is still not too late to join in by cycling or walking.”

The event is organised by the Beds and Herts Historic Churches Trust and is now in its 21st year.

The aim is to raise money both for the Trust and for the participating churches with half of every cyclist’s and walker’s sponsor money going to the Trust and half goes to the church of their choice.

In the last financial year local churches and chapels in the two counties benefited by more than £260,000 through grants and fundraising by the Beds and Herts Historic Churches Trust with cash for repairs or structural improvements.

Organisers are looking for more cyclists or walkers who woudl like to take part, so for more information visit www.bedshertshct.org.uk or bikenhike@bedshertshct.org.uk
