Town festival is the best yet
SUMMER could not have come at a better time for the thousands of people who flocked to this year's Linslade Canal Festival on Saturday.
The sun shone down at last upon the scenic Tiddenfoot Waterside Park off Mentmore Road as the fifth annual event, which was the biggest and best yet, was in full swing.
More than 85 exhibitors attended the popular free community festival. It meant that there was something for everyone to see, do and enjoy, including face painting, a drumming workshop, hands-on nature activities or even take a cruise on the canal.
The rural craft demonstrations attracted much attention as the talented crafts people displayed how they still use traditional methods to create a whole host of practical tools and goods, including thatching, willow work, woven baskets, besom brooms and stained glass. People were particularly interested in the Chesterton Horse Loggers, who gave talks throughout the day, the country chair making and the pole lathe turning.
The main arena staged musical entertainment throughout the day from traditional folk act The DooLallys, Dixieland Jazz, The Brierley Strollers and The Half Moon Drum Circle.
Visitors mused over the vintage tractors of The Old Farts group, admired the Birds of Bray owls, hawks and falcons, and could view over 40 working and historic working boats, some of which dated back to the 1920s.
Traditional children's rides kept the little ones entertained.
Leighton-Linslade Leisure and Promotions Officer Donna Hughes said: "The town council would like to thank all those who took part on the day and all the volunteers. We hope that everyone really had a lovely day."
The wooden wishing seat worth 100, which was carved by chain saw sculptor Dick Tilley on the day, has still yet to be claimed by the lucky holder of the winning raffle ticket. The ticket was light pink and number 175. The name Colin was written on the back along with a telephone number but this could not be read. The ticket holder is asked to present the winning ticket at the Town Council Offices in The White House, Hockliffe Road, to claim their prize. Alternatively, telephone (01525) 631920.
