A family of travellers appeared in a crown court dock yesterday (Monday) accused of slavery offences.
Seven members of the Connors family are said to have kept vulnerable men as slaves and forced them to carry out unpaid labour.
They were arrested when police raided the Green Acres Caravan Site at Little Billington on September 11 last year.
The case is being heard by Judge Michael Kay QC.
The defendants, six of whom live at the site just a few miles from Leighton Buzzard, face a total of 20 charges. They are:
Thomas Connors Senior, 52, his sons Tommy, 26, James, 24, and Patrick, 20, another son Johnny Connors, 28, of The Travellers’ Site, Chiswell Green Lane, St Albans and his daughter Josie, 30, and her husband James Connors, 34.
The case is due to be opened later this week by prosecutor Frances Oldham QC and is expected to last 13 weeks.
Yesterday was spent on jury selection and legal argument.
