University applicants down in Beds
APPLICATIONS to the University of Bedfordshire dropped by 8.5 per cent this year as students face tuition fees of £9,000.
Figures released by UCAS showed the university received applications from 15,373 students wanting to join in 2012.
This compares with 16,802 applications received in 2011, and 14,135 in 2010.
Head of admissions Susie King said: “In the three years to 2011, applications to study at Bedfordshire doubled. Last year, we had more than five applications for every place available. We didn’t expect to see the same increase this year, and our figures are in line with the national picture.”
There is an increase in applications for biological and other sciences, with nursing and midwifery proving very popular.
The university offers scholarships and bursaries, at up to £9,000 per year. Visit www.beds.ac.uk/studentlife/registration/scholarships.
