UPDATE: Resident’s shock at armed siege
A shocked resident says he couldn’t get back into his home because of last night’s armed siege in Bridge Street, Leighton Buzzard.
Bridge Street resident Damien Plummer, 43, was stopped by police as he walked back from his creative writing class in North Street.
He said: “I came back at about 9.30pm and I noticed they had cordoned off Friday Street. A policeman called out for me to stop and said I couldn’t go any further.
“I thought it was a burst water main or something at first and then one of my friends from the writing group told me it was a gunman.
“Leighton Buzzard is usually such a safe place. I’ve lived in my flat for about six years and I’ve never had any problems at all. Everybody’s agog at what’s going on.”
Officers were called to the Bridge Street area at about 5pm yesterday after receiving a call about a man’s safety. They spent five hours outside the flat, believed to be in the Ropa Court area, negotiating with a man who was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
Bridge Street, West Street and Friday Street were all cordoned off by police.
Police later confirmed that a 42-year-old man had been taken into custody and that a replica firearm has been seized
