Use your brain and do a sponsored walk

A sponsored walk along the Grand Union Canal has been organised in aid of the united UK brain tumour charities.

Brain Tumour Research is organising a walk between Soulbury, Leighton Buzzard and Great Linford, Milton Keynes to raise much-needed funds.

The Grand Union Canal sponsored walk is part of Brain Tumour Research’s new campaign “Conquer it Together” which aims to raise £1 million in order to launch a new “Centre of Hope” dedicated to brain tumour research.

Organisers promise it to be a fun day out for families, dogs (well-behaved ones on leads) and those who love an excuse to experience the great outdoors, with walkers being offered the choice of starting from or finishing at either the Three Locks pub in Soulbury or the Black Horse in Great Linford, which is approximately 11 miles.

If you would prefer a more gentle stroll you can instead finish at either the Peartree Bridge Inn at Peartree Bridge, Milton Keynes, or The Plough at Simpson, Milton Keynes, which is between four and seven miles depending on where you start and finish.

A minibus service will operate from 2 - 5.30pm, taking you back to your car if you have elected to do the full 11 mile walk or more intrepid hikers can opt for walking the round trip of 22 miles.

The walk is on September 29 and walkers are asked to arrive at the Three Locks pub or the Black Horse between 9.30am and 10.30am for registration when tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches will be available to purchase.

Sue Farrington Smith, director of Brain Tumour Research, explained: “We desperately need to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for a disease which currently kills more children and people under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Our “Conquer it Together” campaign asks people to challenge themselves either mentally or physically to raise as much awareness and sponsorship money as possible to bring hope to the thousands of people diagnosed with a brain tumour each year and their families and this walk is just one way you can get involved.

“Everyone who enters the Challenge will receive a certificate for the money they raise, as well as a “Conquer it Together” medal if they raise over £100. I will be taking part in the Grand Union Canal walk with my family and dogs on the September 29 and it would be lovely to see as many people as possible enjoying a beautiful walk while raising funds for a good cause.

“If you are up for the challenge, you can register and request a sponsorship form by emailing sarah@braintumourresearch.org or by phoning Sarah on 01296 733011. Registration is just £5 per person and children under 16 are free. Alternatively you can bring cash or a cheque (made payable to Brain Tumour Research) on the day. You can also set up a Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com so that your friends and colleagues can help you raise funds for Brain Tumour Research. Let’s work together to get one step closer to a cure for brain tumours.”
