Vale growth target to support 6,000 jobs

Councillors have debated options for how Aylesbury Vale should develop over the next 20 years to support a growth target of 6,000 new jobs.

At a meeting of Aylesbury Vale District Council’s cabine, councillors recommended a figure of 6,000 additional new homes (300 per year) until 2031 to support employment growth and to provide housing for future generations.

The new homes needed over the next two decades will be in addition to the 7,300 new homes that have already been given planning permission.

The soon-to-be-abolished South East Plan had previously set a target of 26,890 new homes in Aylesbury Vale by 2026. That target is being scrapped by the current government, allowing councils to plan for a scale of growth that they believe is appropriate to their local area.

New housing and employment growth figures were previously considered by the cabinet at a meeting in May. However, following that meeting, the cabinet stated that it needed additional information, particularly in relation to economic changes and infrastructure planning, giving it the opportunity to review its decision in the light of this further evidence.

Following the cabinet decision this week, planning officers can continue work on the strategy document which will set out the jobs and housing targets, the distribution of growth, the principles of how development should take place and the phasing of that development. This document will be considered again by cabinet in the autumn before being presented to full council for approval. It will then be subject to public examination by an independent inspector in early 2013.

The proposed growth figures follow consultation with all the town and parish councils in the Vale as well as a public consultation with residents, businesses, developers and other interested parties, who were asked for their views on a number of options for jobs and housing numbers for the district to 2031, and how these might be distributed across the area.
