Vandals won't sink Linslade's Ship

£1000 worth of greenery destroyed

'You won't sink us!' That is the message from the new owners of The Ship Carvery in Linslade, after vandals destroyed their newly planted flower displays on Friday.

Sarah and Simon Marrone arrived early at the Wing Road pub/restaurant to find 1,000 worth of greenery and blooms strewn over the car park and on the pavement.

Hanging baskets were ripped from their holdings and turned upside down, planters were emptied and two giant planter barrels were moved from outside the entrance to the middle of the car park. Two flower tubs have also been stolen.

Sarah and Simon opened the carvery a week ago and it's proving popular following the 80,000 spent on refurbishments. But the couple, who also own The Golden Bell and The Top Bell, have been stunned by the attack.

Sarah said: "There are some who obviously do not want you to succeed in this town. It's sad for the locals as well because they told us that nothing much happens down Wing Road. We will carry on like we always do – we are not going to be put off – and we will open our doors at 11am as usual."

Simon is now looking at CCTV on the premises. He said: "We will fight this."

Leighton Buzzard Garden Centre had helped The Ship decide on the flowers for the Leighton Buzzard in Bloom competition.

And staff from the garden centre were there on Friday to help pick up the mess.

Simon said: "A lot of thought went into the displays. This is just senseless vandalism."

The destruction is thought to have taken place between midnight and 2am on Friday.

A Beds Police spokesman said: "Damage has been caused to the hanging baskets and flowers around the premises.

"The front door was also damaged although it is not thought that the offenders were trying to gain entry.

"We would urge anyone with any information to contact their nearest police station or call Bedfordshire Police on 01234 841212."
