Victim of fatal fire identified

54-year-old Leighton man is named

An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of Liam Michael Canning, 54, of Kilgour Court, Bassett Road, Leighton, who died following a fire at his flat on August 27.

Mr Canning was rescued from the property by Leighton firefighters. He was taken to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital before being transferred to a specialist burns unit at a hospital in Essex.

The victim, who suffered 35 per cent burns, bravely fought for life but died five days later.

A post-mortem revealed that Mr Canning died of severe burns and complications caused by the inhalation of fire fumes. A full inquest will be held at a later date.

A 42-year-woman is on bail after being arrested on suspicion of arson.
