Be under no illusion, Leighton’s Matthew McGurk is carving out a magical career for himself in the entertainment industry.
The 32-year-old has been refining his art since he was a teenager, so it’s no surprise that he’s now leaving the public spellbound. And Matthew has just performed to his biggest audience yet.
The magician, from Townbridge Mill, Leighton Road was the headline entertainer for the 18th Annual Crystal Boot Award hosted by Line Dancer Magazine at Norbreck Castle in Blackpool.
His act, consisting of a huge illusion involving spikes and fire, was performed for 2,000 guests at the event but was also broadcast by a live internet stream to more than 50,000 online viewers worldwide.
Matthew said: “It was unbelievable, the reaction from the crowd at the end of our performance was unreal. They literally erupted with this huge roar.
“We spent over three months planning just this six-minute show, I was quite emotional to hear that reaction, it made it all the hard work worthwhile!”
Matthew opened the ceremony by making the publisher of the Line Dancer Magazine, Betty Drummond, appear in one of his illusions.
Matthew then fulfilled a dream of his by performing an illusion that was created by his hero Mark Kalin.
The American illusionist and his assistant Jinger have been headlining in Vegas for many years and have recently been on a world tour with The Illusionists, the world’s largest touring Illusion show. The Fire Spiker has become their signature Illusion.
Matthew said: “We knew we needed something truly unbelievable for such a prestigious event so I contacted my hero Mark Kalin to ask his permission to perform the Fire Spiker. I couldn’t believe it when he gave me his blessing. I got to perform an Illusion that I had dreamed about as a child in front of an audience of over 50,000!”
