Warning to Leighton pensioners
Distraction burglary at elderly woman's home
Pensioners in Leighton Buzzard are being warned to be on their guard against distraction burglars.
It follows an offence at 2.45pm on Wednesday (September 1) in East Street, Leighton Buzzard when two men called at the home of a woman in her 70s.
A smartly dressed man approached the lady in her back garden and asked her if she wanted any jobs doing. The victim declined and a few minutes later another man appeared and asked if she had seen his friend. The man kept the lady talking for around five minutes and left.
The elderly lady was then alerted by a neighbour and told a man had just climbed through the front window. The lady searched her property and discovered an amount of cash had been removed from a number of purses in the house.
Det Sgt Sean Quinn, investigating, said one of the offenders was white, 5ft tall, with a stocky build and he wore a navy blue suit.
He wants to remind elderly people to always use a spy-hole and chain and insist on seeing identification from callers. If in doubt, call 999.
He added: "I would like to speak to anyone who saw the men hanging around East Street."
If you would like to arrange a visit from a local Crime Reduction Officer to help keep burglars out, please contact Bedfordshire Police on 01234 841212.
Anyone with information relating to this incident can contact DS Sean Quinn at Dunstable Police Station, in confidence, on 01582 473195, or text your message to 07786 200011, or you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
