It has been two years since a writers’ group for the Leighton Buzzard area was launched to bring talented individuals together to improve their skill.

And now, the founder of The Writing Room, John Newton, is delighted to say that out of his 18 member group there are now eight published authors.

John said: “Members meet regularly to read their work for comment, critique and encouragement in a friendly atmosphere, with every member involved in helping each other to improve and develop their writing skills.

“We are delighted that novice authors join with the urge to write, but little knowledge of the craft and within a short time are turning out stories of considerable charm and skill.

“We give close attention to encouraging each other with detailed friendly and constructive criticism from all round the table for both new and experienced writers.

“We’re preparing an
e-book of member’s short stories and articles to go up on Kindle during April or May as a display of our work and to give our newer writers an audience.”

The most recent is Barrie Hyde, 59, who last month signed a contract with Safkhet Publishing for his new novel, A Higher Authority, which is due out in the summer of 2014.

After 33 years Barrie, of Taylors Ride, Leighton, left the world of business and turned to writing about the seamier and secretive world of commerce running beneath the surface. To ensure success in this second career he studied the craft of writing and, to be with other writers and gain encouragement from their experience, joined The Writing Room.

Writers also have the opportunity to attend occasional workshops, which John says have caused an immediate quality jump in writing standards.

The Writing Room meets on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm at The Barn, Heath & Reach to read, discuss and exchange views and help each other too.

Stories and articles from the past two years are now being compiled for publication as an e-book. Call John Newton on 01525 378193 for more information.
