A nine-year-old swimmer is appealing for the town to pool its resources and back his campaign against cancer.
Luca Bainbridge, of Atterbury Avenue, Leighton, was devastated to lose his beloved grandfather, John, 79, to bowel cancer just before Christmas.
The tragedy has spurred the Heathwood Lower School pupil to take action.
His mum, Sue, said: “Christmas and New Year were a difficult time for us and our children.
“Luca asked if he could do something, in his words, ‘to try and get rid of this horrible disease’.
“ He came up with the idea of doing a sponsored swim and to raise money for Cancer Research.
“He loves swimming and is a member of Linslade Crusaders Swimming Club.
“His challenge is to now swim 200 lengths (5km) of Tiddenfoot Swimming Pool.
“We have had so much support on our just giving page with his original target of £150 well and truly smashed. It currently stands at £612.
“He just loves checking the JustGiving website to see if his total has gone up again.
“We are so proud of him. He has been collecting sponsors from friends, family, and teachers at school.
“ This has truly helped him overcome the sadness of losing his grandad”.
The family thanked Graham Pepper from the Crusaders who has organised, with Tiddenfoot, for the swim to take place, is giving Luca extra training sessions and will also oversee his swim on February 2.
“We couldn’t have done it without his help and guidance,” added Sue.
“Hopefully he will do it within about three to four hours, with a few rest breaks in between – no mean feat for a nine-year-old!”
