Leighton Buzzard enthusiastically said ‘howdy partner!’ to a Wild West Sunday lunch this summer – with the day so successful that plans for more themed Sundays are underway, writes Jo Gravett.

A rootin’ tootin’ time was had by all, as bronco rides, wing boats, a tin can alley, and cowboy entertainment took place in the High Street on June 1, with the town’s wannabe cowboys and cowgirls even having a go at line dancing!

Food vendors were invited to take part, with the dishes available being far from wild west beans-in-a-tin, and ranging instead from fish and chips to thai green curry and Caribbean delights to hog roast.

Leighton-Linslade Town Council’s partnership commitee has now said ‘ye-ha!’ to the successful event, with hopes that another Sunday Big Lunch event will be held next year, while discussions to continue the scheme for the next five years are underway.

Meanwhile, if next year’s lunch goes ahead, it is being mooted that £10,000 could be included in the partnership budget to support the lunch’s delivery, promotion, and entertainment.

Jo Martindale, the council’s partnership officer, said: “Over 2,000 visitors were seen in the High Street at any one time with everyone enjoying the free entertainment!

“Events like this showcase the town, and raise its profile with residents and visitors alike.”
