Plans to extend Slapton travellers’ site given the go ahead

Plans to expand a travellers’ site in Slapton have been given the go ahead despite fierce opposition from local councillors.

Aylesbury Vale District Council approved plans for several additional pitches at the Willows Park site in Leighton Road despite the site having remained unused for around two years.

The council as approved provision for an extra three pitches on a temporary basis, with another five having already been granted permanent permission following an appeal.

The proposals had faced opposition from Slapton Councillors who described the area as already having a ‘disproportionate number of gypsies’.

The LBO reported last week how Willows Park is within three miles of two other approved travellers’ sites.

It is only several hundred yards from the Greenacres site in Little Billington which was previously subject to a police investigation amid allegations of slavery.

Slapton councillors feared that rather than providing new plots for travellers from Aylesbury Vale, the additional spaces at Willows Park would provide an overspill for Little Billington.
