Police response to siege praised
In the aftermath of the Leighton siege, the focus turned to the response by emergency services in light of recent criticism over cuts.
And leading the praise for Bedfordshire Police was Police and Crime Commisioner, Olly Martins.
He said: “I think it demonstrates that despite people’s concerns about the new policing model, when something like this happens there are services and resources where needed. I hope it was of reassurance to people.”
Chairman of I Love LB, Gennaro Borelli, who witnessed the beginning of the dramatic events as they unfolded, said: “The incident is terrible news because this is not something we want to see in the town.
“A lot of businesses on Bridge Street have been affected, like restaurants and takeaways that had to close.
“They (the police) were very professional and calm. They did an excellent job and I have to say that in view of all the cuts, the fact that they were able to respond to this situation and deal with it in a very efficient and competent way is very reassuring for people.
“It was a terrible shame that so many police had to be called out for this incident.”
Deputy leader of Leighton-Linslade Town Council, Councillor Amanda Dodwell, said: “In response to the comment regarding the apparent lack of police in the town, it was clearly demonstrated last week that when we do have a major emergency in the town that it is dealt with swiftly and effectively.
“I would like to express on behalf of the town council our thanks to Bedfordshire Police for the way in which they brought about a peaceful conclusion to last Tuesday’s incident.”
