Stables gives us folk, jazz, blues rock
What's On at The Stables, Wavenden, this week.
Scots trio Lau is a formidable union of three of the finest and most innovative exponents of 'modern traditional' music across the border today.
This spring they took the Best Group title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and with a year of dates around the globe they look set to cause serious musical trouble worldwide. You can see them at The Stables, Wavendon, today (Tuesday).
*Prohibition ushered in Chicago's gangster era as bootleggers vied with each other to supply illicit liquor, with fortunes made and lost against the background of the Roaring Twenties. This was a golden age for music as jazz and blues flourished in the clubs and dancehalls operated by the mob.
A show at The Stables tomorrow (Nov 5) called It's A Raid is packed with intriguing stories and memorable songs, tracing the rise and fall of some of Chicago's most notorious characters.
It's performed by Britain's finest boogie-woogie and blues pianist Bob Hall and international blues singing sensation Diana Braithwaite.
*The Red Bullets have been described as 'an intelligent off-beat pop band with a twist of rock'. They are committed to songwriting, excellent musicianship and giving their audiences a good time.
The band consists of brothers Pete and Mark Edwards, Mark Wheeler and Kyle Hall. Their work has been likened to that of Coldplay, Mika, Foo Fighters, the Stereophonics, the Scissor Sisters and Queen.
They're touring all over the UK this year taking in festivals, London venues, a tour of the south west – and The Stables on Thursday.
*Leighton singer/guitarist Dan Raza makes a welcome second visit to The Stables on Friday.
Dan was only the second act to perform on The Stables acoustic stage a year ago and is returning with his new-look band.
For the uninitiated, Dan's sound can be best described as a 21st century brew of classic bands like Van Morrison, The Faces and Lightning Hopkins.
In the last few years he has been gradually building up a cult following in the UK and abroad through high-profile festival appearances such as Summer Sundae, and also the song, 'Every Little Dog,' which has been featured heavily on Neil Young's 'Living With War' website.
He has shared a stage with Badly Drawn Boy, supported Show of Hands, Mary Gauthier and Chris Farlowe, toured Europe with Joan Armatrading and, earlier this year, played in the US with celebrated folk singer, Slaid Cleaves.
