Super weather and a super day for the family
Float competition was hot.
Saturday was a scorching hot day and it brought the crowds out for Leighton's carnival.
A total of 14 floats took part in the superhero-themed procession from Mentmore Road into Grove Road led by the Blue Angel Majorettes.
Rock'n'roll band The Pink Cardiacs played on the band stand for an hour and a half in a tribute to former band member Tony Lathwell, who died last week, and the town's talented dance and gymnastics groups entertained in the arena.
Stalls, go-karts and the funfair kept all ages entertained on what was the hottest day of the year so far.
Winners of the float awards were: Children's section, Pulford VA Lower School, The Mary Bassett Lower School, and 1st Leighton Buzzard Guides.
Open class, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Brooklands Residents' Association, Curtain Call Theatre group, and TAIAC 'Charlie's Future'.
The walking/cycling section was won by Leighton Buzzcycles, closely followed by Totternhoe Lower School and Leighton Buzzard Writers Group.
Rock'n'rollers the Pink Cardiacs drew in a large crowd around the band stand. A band spokesman said: "Pink Cardiacs would like to thank all of you who came to support our tribute to Tony Lathwell. It was such a pleasure to see so many of you enjoying the sunshine, the music and the opportunity to dance. We enjoyed being able to entertain you and thank you so much for your kind words of support and comfort.
"It was lovely how many of you knew Tony and came up to talk to us about him with your memories. We were really amazed and so touched to see so many people there and it helped us enormously to be able to give it the best we could for our friend.
"We will continue to mourn the loss of Tony very much and his guitar playing which contributed so much to the band's sound, will be sadly missed. However, the band will continue as a foursome in Tony's honour.
"We would all like to thank you very much for making it such a special tribute to Tony."
Meanwhile, it is back to business shortly for the carnival committee who will soon be planning next year's parade and would welcome constructive feedback from this year's event. They also need more male members. Contact chairman Mark Freeman on ll.carnival.co.uk
Mark said: "It was a brilliant day, and we are grateful to all the stallholders and those who do floats – without them it would be nothing. The weather also made it a very exciting day."
