Everyone knows he has gone from working in the pro shop at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club to becoming one of the world’s top ranking golfers, but what they might not realise is that Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter is actually a successful businessman, too.

The 36-year-old, who now lives in Florida with his wife and four children, helped to secure an unexpected win over the USA by claiming victory against rival Webb Simpson just over two weeks ago, but his talent could be down to his clothes design.

Ian launched a golf clothing brand business named IJP Design, of Grovebury Road, Leighton Buzzard in July 2007 after being unable to find clothes he wanted to wear on the golf course that would look good and not affect his performance.

He started out sketching designs on letterheads and airline coasters as he toured the world – but now his label is expected to stock kit for 30 golf-playing nations throughout world by the end of the year.

Head of design at IJP Design, Sophie Snowball, 29. says it is all in the detail to make sure presentation and performance is combined in the design of professional golf clothes.

She said: “Ian is still very much involved in the design side of the business. He performs wearer trials and reports back on every style. He also sends photos of ideas and inspiration he finds on his travels around the globe. He is a perfectionist, everything has to be just so. With the care and attention to detail in the clothing, that means there is one less thing to worry about when he is playing golf. All the garments perform to the highest standard allowing Ian to focus purely on his game.”
